Forget about the big boats (although they are fun too) as the kayak rules around the shallow islands. Get a localized map, provided at the counter so everyone knows the paths and waterways by the launch area. You can get so much closer to the nature and just wave at the boats much further offshore!
How is the kayaking in Islamorada? You can dump your kayak in at so many good places. Often the best spot is right behind you hotel or cottage. In the Upper Florida Keys we have found nice trails to paddle around Key Largo, Lignumvitae Key, Plantation Key, and Windley Key. It gets the best around mile marker 80, or in this region. Have fun, but bring the bug spray as it does become a problem every now and then.
