In the early 1990s, Hurricane Andrew crashed an aquarium tank in Miami Florida along the coastline (aquarium trading). Less than ten of the spiny and venomous Lionfish washed into the Ocean (sounds like no big deal). But this spawned an invasion that could kill off local fishing industry along with the native fish. The Lionfish Hunt Derby Series is conducted to halt the growth of Lionfish population.
Reef Environmental Workshop Education One of the periodic free events that is offered by the Reef gang. If you can schedule it, they do a nice job of explaining the steps to easily handle the mean old nasty lionfish. We all have to work together (boaters, fishing captains, and divers) to remove them continuously from the Sanctuary Preservation Areas.
Lionfish at the Visitors Center Get an up-close view of the Lionfish at the Visitors Center inside Pennekamp Park Key Largo. They have a huge tank in there and is a must see in the Upper Florida Keys.
Florida Keys Scuba Events $1,000 for the most lionfish, $500 for largest lionfish and the smallest lionfish. Good prizes to dive for.
