Simply an outstanding adventure trip for all ages is the kayak paddle out to Indian Key. The kayak rentals are easy to get and cheap to do. They show you the maps, set you up very quickly with the gear. Just step into the boat and sit down, and then you are off on the journey. Plan for about one to two hours, depending on how much time you spend walking around the island pathways. The island is historic and has been all set up for the kayaks to stop and people get out for a self guided walking tour. It is so fun to do!
This is an excellent activities for those on vacation in the Upper Florida Keys. You stop and park the car at Robbie's Marina, on the right side heading down at mile marker 77.5. I thought the price was outstanding to the value rewards.
No experience at all is required to do this. I thought it might be tough for ladies, but you do tandem for double strength. Paddle easy, no muscle is needed if you just take your time. Try to go when the winds are light.
We were lucky enough to have the entire island to ourselves. A short paddle across the channel and do hit the side of the island. Head towards the south side of the island to the canoe launch. We landed at high tide and put the kayak on the rocks, since there was no beach. Indian key is rich in history, like many places in the keys. The water is shallow, with decent Snorkeling all the way around the island.
