We stayed at the Truman Annex, which is over by the courthouse. You will notice the different on your first night in Old Town Key West. This area has the most free roaming chickens and they do not cause any problems. It is too cool, the world of playful chickens and roosters living here too and just look how cute!
Luckily, we drink so much that we could not hear a rooster a night. They do sleep too, it is in the morning when you go out for breakfast when you start to see all the chickens running around.
The legend goes like this. Chickens were so needed in the years before the 50's and 60's. Cheap eggs could be bought, so dealing with the chickens was not worth the trouble. People just let them go. You can eat some good chicken at Help Yourself Cafe. Also, they tell you this chicken story on the Hemingway Tour.
It's always so nice to hear the chickens in the morning when you wake up in Key West. Cock-a-doodle-do! Ah, Key West at it's best, so laid back.
